F. Scott Giffin grew up in Tempe, Arizona. He earned his B.A. in history from Stanford University. Afterward, he received a commission from Aviation Officer Candidate School and served as a pilot in the United States Navy, deploying on cruisers, destroyers, and frigates, and crash landing large helicopters on small decks. This included a tour in support of Desert Storm. Giffin now works winters as an adaptive ski instructor at Vail. He enjoys skiing, mountain biking, climbing, adventure racing, and just about anything else in the vertical realm. He completed a M.A. in Science Writing at Johns Hopkins to write about the places he loves and the environmental changes he is witnessing. He lives in Leadville, Colorado, with his wife and a pack of rescued dogs, most of whom are rather large Saint Bernards.
